Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was an English novelist, mostly short story writer but also biographer and travel writer, best know for her gothic novel "Frankenstein" (1818).

The story is about Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a deformed but wise creature during a scientific experiment after the death of his mother. This novel, which is considered the first true science fiction story, has inspired many horror stories, films and plays.
