Book Details

Hamington is one of the world's leading theorists of care theory, particularly as applied to social/political issues. Hamington has multi-year involvement not only publishing many books and articles but also with positions in associations (such as the Care Ethics Research Consortium (CERC), the Melele Center of Philosophy for Care), editorial boards (Peeters Ethics of Care Book Series, Feminist Formations), and research projects such as the Care Aesthetics: Research Exploration (CARE). His name alone will make this book attractive in university course across the U.S. and as essential material for care ethics researchers.

The book explores the thinking and writing of many disciplines, including both traditional and non-traditional sources. In particular, the arguments utilize new scholarship in care ethics, including authors of color, queer scholars, and indigenous thinkers. The social sciences and the humanities are drawn from as well.

Transdisciplinary - areas of study this book would readily apply to include ethics, political theory/science, sociology, and women and gender studies.

There is a new wave of care ethics scholars, programs, and classes building on the first wave (Gilligan, Noddings, Tronto). The care ethical literature is burgeoning and care ethics itself is now a core ethical theory that is being taught in undergraduate and graduate courses. This is the golden era of the care ethical literature - there is enough literature to draw on and readily advance, but not so much that the literature is saturated.

Includes applications to several controversial areas/topics such as feminism and toxic masculinity, socialism and care economy, humanism and posthumanism, environmentalism, pacifism, anti-racism, and veganism.

Hamington uses plain language as much as possible and to avoid theoretical or philosophical jargon or terminology. Extensive examples, including chapter-opening vignettes and poetry, make the reading engaging.
