Medieval Narrative begins with a survey of how the idea of medieval narrative has influenced later generations of literature and scholarship and an introduction to both medieval and modern theories of narrative highlighting the similarities and the differences between them. It then proceeds to an analysis of each of the major genres of medieval narrative including didactic exempla and fables; the historical forms of chronicle, epic, and romance; comic tales, from the fabliau to the novella; fantasy and dream narratives, and tragedy.
